Trevor Watts (saxes/compositions), Jamie Harris (Percussion), Veryan Weston (Piano & keyboard)
Eternal Triangle play the music of Trevor Watts, compositions originally inspired by rhythmic structures from Africa and South America as well as jazz and European musical forms. The trio is built on two duos: Veryan and Trevor first played together in Trevor's “Moiré Music” in the early 1980s and since then have had a long collaboration in the 'Dialogues' project where their work as open improvisers was explored together for many years worldwide.
The second duo consists of Jamie and Trevor where Jamie was involved in Trevor's 'Celebration Band' in the 2000s and later they were involved in a very successful duo touring worldwide and recording several CDs. The third duo with Veryan and Jamie is yet to be explored!
In July 2021 the three musicians began working together on some beautiful new pieces specifically conceived by Trevor. The development of these compositions, for instance, can happen during rehearsals or during a concert. Any player in the group can discover something new within each piece, and therefore the compositions are ever changing. The strengths of this trio are like the durable and inert strength of a triangle, where each side supports the other - 'Eternal Triangle'. This is a music with a depth that is both expansive and honest.Musical sample

The amazing Trevor Watts on alto & soprano saxophones with Veryan Weston on 'keystation' which is a relatively new departure for him in to the world of digital keyboard sound generation. It takes their shared 'Dialogues' project in to new places of exploring improvisation. There is still a jazz feel and sensibility about it, but because of the fact that they are both composers of some note, the improvisations always have a strong sense of structure.
There is a common love of traditional musics of the world. Trevor has had long experience playing with African musicians in his Drum Orchestra (circa 1980) and Veryan has researched the relationships between certain pentatonic scales for many years . There is a rigorous study of rhythm which has been important to them both and this is clearly heard in their music together, but along with this they are not afraid to explore melody and harmony in their own fresh and open ways. "Watts’ calling high sounds over Weston’s balletic shapes often sound as bright and shapely as compositions, and wriggling sax runs against boogie-like piano fuse together so heatedly that both players’ notes blur into drones....a significant document...constantly reinforcing the sense of a dynamic relationship in action". We spent 10 years together working in Trevor's band - Moiré Music and have also played together in duo and other contexts for much longer.
The following comments relate to our two CDs on Emanem Records.
“And herein, lies some quite lovely music. Veryan Weston and Trevor Watts have known each other a long time. Weston was a charter and long-serving member of Watts’ Moiré Music group and it’s not surprising that these six tracks reveal high levels of empathy between these two musicians. Watts’ sour and angular alto and sinuous soprano fit well with Weston’s lyrical and yet rhythmic piano. This is, at times, music remarkable for the fact that it is composed in the moment. It sounds like both men know exactly where their partner is at any given moment and are ready for whatever comes next. And yet at the same time, it has that super-live spontaneity.” Duncan Heining - Jazzwise
“Weston’s rhetoric is instantly graspable and yet teasingly enigmatic. It delivers, as does Watt’s saxophone, immediately and almost physically, and yet you’ll find yourself revisiting these fine improvisations for days just to hear two fine musicians in affectionate and thoughtful dialogue.” Brian Morton -Jazz Review

"5 MORE DIALOGUES offers more in the way of fascinating elaborations by long-time collaborators, pianist Veryan Weston and saxophonist Trevor Watts, both heralded artisans of the British progressive jazz and improvisational circuit. A mark of invention pervades throughout, as the duo fuses sublime persuasions, inverted theme-building jaunts, and mesmeric passages with fleeting melodies and rhythmical dynamics.
Highlighted by a manifold approach to the program, the duo aligns a throng of angular discourses, generating an intimate, probing and somewhat mischievous sequence of dialogues on Exchanged Frequencies. The musicians elucidate a buoyant progression of flirtatious encounters via eloquent expansionism, also dispersing loops into smaller sections to synergistically create a multi-part and excitable storyline with a busy, yet productive string of events.
Other than the highly artistic attributes, the duo's resiliency, superior technical acumen and rapidly conceived subplots engender a program that towers above similar endeavours by other prominent and lesser-known improvisers. 5 MORE DIALOGUES is a comprehensive and effervescent portrayal of the finer points of improvised music." “When the two nudge away at a single idea for some minutes, as they do on the three closing tracks, it’s hard to resist.” (Richard Cook and/or Brian Morton - The Penguin Guide To Jazz On Cd)

The above double CD was released in 2012 - on the Hi4HeadRecs label called “Dialogues in two places”, HFHCD 010D (recorded 2011). This is the first 'live' CD we have made. It is a document of our 2011 USA and Canadian tour, recorded in Toledo and at the Guelph Jazz Festival. On both these two occasions we were met with a lot of support and enthusiasm.
DIALOGUES WITH STRINGS PROJECT The title for this CD and compositions were inspired by a desire that Veryan and I had, which was to open up our regular duo's musical improvisational interactions and incorporate other musicians within them......I had been offered a broadcast by the BBC and suggested this quartet idea to Veryan who immediately was enthusiastic about it, so the group was born (Trevor Watts - 2017). |

And the next poetry of strings - Incredible quartet with Trevor Watts, Veryan Weston, Hannah Marshall & Alison Blunt !!! Free improvisation in contemporary way or exactly opposite. With emotions and crazy load of energy. Maybe the best event on Festival... so far!!!
(Ad Lib Festival in Warsaw - October 2017)
Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston have collaborated for many years, as have cellist Hannah Marshall and violinist Alison Blunt, while there have been various crossovers between the two duos. When all four play together, the result is quicksilver improvisation with a remarkable range of moods.
(The Columns, Soundcheck, the Wire – January 2018)
It is always a pleasure to see Trevor Watts blooming and vital as he always was since I've first met him well over fifty years ago. I wish for many more years of him being as productive and artistically challenging, as he still is today. British Jazz would have never been what it is today without his contribution. Respect! (Adam Barusch - January 2018).
