Lol died tragically on 10th July 2012. He was a vital person in my life on all levels. A close friend and mentor as well as a kindred spirit who shared his love of an enormous amount of different kinds of music with me, so as a result introduced me to a lot of music. My first public recording was with Lol on his record entitled 'The Joy Of Paranoia'. This was in the early 1970s (Ogun Records) when we were both at Digswell House Arts Centre in Welwyn Garden.

After a gig in Southend when forgetting to eat a bag of Winkles, the name stuck and became the Hertfordshire-based band (Called Stinky Winkles) I was involved in and with whom he sat in on several occasions. An inspiration to many of us, and helped shape our musical directions.
We co-composed parts of the music for Derek Jarman's Carravaggio and we performed together in the 80s through to 2006 throughout Europe playing in Trevor Watts' Moire Music (Arc 02 Records) as well as open improvisations heard on the EMANEM recordings - Digswell Duets (re-release), Boundless and Worms Organising Archdukes. We also enjoyed playing standards and jazz tunes and had a band which was called Standard Conversions. Examples of us playing tunes can be heard on Spectral Soprano and The Inimitable Lol Coxhill.
"Like Lol, Weston is a brilliant miniaturist and the combination of the two is exquisite. Not that many of these 15 tracks are particularly short. The longest are over six minutes and are developed in the saxophonist's familiar jazz-based style. Weston is no less lateral a thinker, but his resources are very different, and part of the joy of the session is the combination of two seemingly unlike personalities who find huge areas of common enthusiasm, almost against the odds. Great stuff and further reminder of Coxhill's improvisational skills." RICHARD COOK and/or BRIAN MORTON 'The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD' 1998.
